Moneysupermarket has released data which analysed over 5.8 million car insurance enquiries to work out the UK's worst motor theft regions.
Using the data to work out motor thefts in each region per 1,000 people london ranked the worst with 11.2 motor thefts per 1,000 people in the capital, closely followed by the West Midlands at 10.9.
East London is the worst place to own a car in the UK with the Ilford and Barking post code the most likely area to have your car stolen, with a rate of 20.3 per 1,000 people.
Not far behind is Romford, also in East London, with a rate of 19.1.
Meanwhile the data reveals that Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands is the safest area for car owners with a rate of just 0.55.
Data also show drivers aged 40-49 face the highest risk of car theft while 17-19-year-olds are least at risk.
Dave Merrick, of Moneysupermarket, said: “Location may impact the cost of [car insurance] premiums.
“Fully comprehensive is a good option for drivers to protect themselves from theft, accidental damage and loss of personal items.”
