The most important part of Christmas dinner has been named and it’s not turkey

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and most families up and down the country are looking forward to tucking into their festive turkey in just over three weeks’ time.

But, the turkey itself is not the item on the festive plate that most people are excited about according to new research carried out to discover the most important aspect of Christmas dinner.

In fact, it’s been revealed that pigs in blankets are the nation’s favourite part of the annual meal.

The mini sausages wrapped in bacon came out top in a poll conducted by NetVoucherCodes.co.uk which asked hundreds of families what the best part of Christmas dinner was.

Getting almost a quarter of the votes, pigs in blankets beat off competition from turkey, which came in second place with 14% of the votes. Roast potatoes came in third with 12% of the votes, followed by stuffing with 9%. Yorkshire pudding also secured 9% of the votes, despite traditionally being something served with beef, rather than turkey.

Controversially, the much-maligned Brussells sprouts received 6% of the vote, just below gravy (7%) but above parsnips (2%).

Interestingly, only 1% of those polled said that Christmas pudding was a must-have with Christmas lunch, together with cranberry sauce. Cabbage and ham also aren’t a necessity on most people’s plates on the big day, with both getting just 1% of the vote.

“Christmas dinner is both the most stressful and the most anticipated part of the holidays and everyone has their own part of the dinner that they look forward to,” a spokesperson for NetVoucherCodes.co.uk said.

“Pigs in Blankets have taken on a life of their own over recent years - from the longest, to pigs in blankets sandwiches, sushi and even cocktails, so it was no surprise to see them come out on the top of the poll.

“Turkey and roast potatoes were always going to be up there - who doesn’t love them?! We were a little surprised to see Christmas pudding so low down on the list of favourites, although maybe modern-day tastes just aren’t a fan of the traditional flavours.

“It’s quite funny actually how the smallest items on the plate, the pigs in blankets, have beaten things like the Turkey which takes the longest to prepare - looks like little things really do come in small packages.”
