The most common charging habit is actually killing your phone — here's the fix

Most people charge their phones to 100% every night without thinking twice. Full battery means maximum usage time, right? But lithium-ion batteries (the type in every iPhone and Android phone) actually degrade faster when they spend hours at full charge or completely drained.

Your phone already has built-in settings designed to protect battery health by limiting charging, but most people never enable them or don't even know they exist. If you plan to keep your phone for more than two years, turning on these features is one of the simplest ways to extend your phone's battery lifespan.

iPhone charging settings for battery health

Open Settings and tap Battery, then tap Charging. You'll see two important options: Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit.

Turn on Optimized Battery Charging. This feature learns your daily charging routine and delays charging past 80% until shortly before you need your phone.

Optimized Battery Charging works best for overnight charging with predictable schedules. If you charge during the day at random times, your phone may stop at 80% and stay there because it can't predict when you'll unplug.

Below Optimized Battery Charging, you'll see Charge Limit. This sets a hard cap on how high your battery charges and is a good alternative to Optimized Battery charging.

Options include 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, or 100%. Select a lower percentage like 85% if you want to manually limit maximum charge to preserve battery health long-term.

And what about Android phones?

Android phones offer similar battery protection, though each manufacturer uses different names and places the settings in slightly different locations.

If you have a Samsung phone, look for "Protect battery" by going to Settings, tapping Battery, then More battery settings. Toggle it on and your phone caps charging at 85%, preventing the battery from staying at full charge for extended periods.

Google Pixel users have "Adaptive Charging" instead, which works like iPhone's Optimized Battery Charging by learning your overnight routine and delaying the final charge to 100% until shortly before you wake up. Find it in Settings under Battery, then Adaptive preferences.

Other Android manufacturers include their own versions. The exact wording varies, but the functionality is essentially the same — limiting how long your battery spends at full charge to slow degradation.

To find yours, open Settings and tap Battery. Look for any option mentioning battery protection, optimized charging, or charging limits.
