Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire

This bohemian Yorkshire town is full of character, from multicoloured house boats which line the canal to compact streets which weave their way through the town centre.

It has the perfect balance of a rural escape from the city with just enough buzz to not leave you at a loss as to what to do next, with plenty of shops to browse and independent cafes to stop and have a warming drink at.

But it’s when the weather turns cold that Hebden Bridge takes on a magical appearance, with rows of frosty-topped houses nestled among the trees.

Take a walk along the canal or have an explore of the nearby Hardcastle Crags, a wooded valley with over 15 miles of footpath, before heading to a cosy pub to warm up in.

Clitheroe, Lancashire

Situated between the Forest of Bowland and Pendle Hill, Clitheroe is an ancient market town perfect for a relaxed wander during the festive season.

If you’re stuck for present ideas this year then take a browse of Clitheroe’s specialist shops where you’ll find some amazing gift ideas. Check out D Byrne & Co which stocks an impressive range of wines, or visit one of the town’s antiques shops for a unique present.

The town is home to its own castle, which dates back to the 12th century and offers stunning views of the town.

For those who are in the mood for a crisp winter’s day walk, then head to nearby Pendle Hill for a hike before a well-earned mince pie.

Buxton, Derbyshire

This spa town is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in the Peak District, which looks even more stunning dusted with a light covering of snow.

Have a stroll past the Crescent, a Grade I listed building reminiscent of Bath’s Royal Crescent; catch a pantomime at Buxton Opera House or admire the Devonshire Dome, one of Buxton’s most famous landmarks.

If you’re looking for a refreshing country walk then follow the circular route to Solomon’s Temple, with amazing views of the Peak District from the top.

Or, for something less strenuous have a mooch around the Pavilion Gardens, set within 23-acres of landscaped gardens.

Bakewell is full of charm (Andrew Hill / geograph.org.uk)

Perhaps one of the prettiest villages in the Peak District, Bakewell is packed full of charming buildings and cosy pubs.

Catch the Bakewell Christmas Tree Festival at Bakewell Parish Church which runs until December 19.

Have a mooch around the village’s independent shops and stop by The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop to pick up some sweet treats.

Not far from the village is Chatsworth House, where you’ll find mesmerising Christmas displays and a magical illuminated walk.

Haworth, Yorkshire

Home of the Brontë sisters, Haworth is steeped in history and is surrounded by rugged countryside.

If you’re a literary fan then visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum, where the famous sisters once lived - or pick up a present for The Wuthering Heights fan in your life.

But it’s picture-postcard high street is full of charm at Christmas time when the buildings are adorned with twinkling lights.

There’s plenty of shops offering unique gifts and snug cafes where you can escape into warmth with a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
