The moments will matter as Amon braces for Cats test

Finals are decided by big moments, and Hawthorn midfielder Karl Amon believes his side can muster enough of them to win their first preliminary final in a decade.

Moments after picking up a handy 17 disposals and a goal in the Hawks' semi-final demolition of Adelaide on Friday night, Amon was already anticipating playing arch rivals Geelong at a packed MCG.

"The Cats are a super team and prelims are massive games," Amon told AAP.

"It's going to be decided by moments. And they're flying at the moment, so it's going be another great challenge."

Reflecting on Friday night's win, he said Adelaide were a "super contest team".

"They obviously had a disappointing loss last week but we knew they were going to respond," he said.

"But we fully believe in our system and it held up.

"They've got some key talls who they go to a fair bit, so I thought our bigs did a really good job nullifying those contests.

"And then the midfield had a super crack on the ground and getting the ball forward.

"Overall, we won our moments and got territory on the ground, which helped us win the game."

The Hawks had risen to the challenge of coming over to the hostile environment of Adelaide Oval to play against the minor premiers.

"We just played four quarters of good footy, which is really good, but it's going to be another challenge next week," Amon said.

"The Cats have had a super year. They've got talent all over the park.

"So a prelim final at the 'G, you couldn't ask for anything better.

"Finals are won by key moments and whoever can take hold of them best, take their chances as best as they can, goes a long way to winning.

"The Cats are going to get their run, we'll get our run.

"But I think it's just going to be decided by who can take those moments."
