The moment when Swansea's Oystermouth Bridge was pulled down

A 40-year-old footbridge in  Swansea has now been removed.

Images and video footage show the moment Oystermouth Road footbridge was taken down.

Work started from the afternoon of Sunday, February 23 into the early hours of Monday.

Swansea's city centre came to a standstill on Sunday afternoon as machinery moved into Oystermouth Road to remove its pedestrian bridge.

Drivers faced long queues as traffic was forced along Princess Way and West Way in order to avoid the demolition.

Workers in hi-vis uniforms could be seen attaching heavy machinery to the concrete bridge, which has guided pedestrians over the busy road for the last 40 years.

A handful of lorries and a large green crane were set up on the stretch of road that hundreds of drivers pass on a daily basis.

Workers were getting started with concrete cutters at around 5pm on Sunday.

The demolition of the bridge was due to take place two weeks ago but  bad weather saw the work halted.

Construction of the new bridge is part of a £135m scheme called Swansea Phase One, which will see  the creation of a 3,500 capacity arena and parkland next to the LC leisure centre.

Swansea Council has said the new landmark bridge will be broader than its predecessor, internally lit and covered, and will link the new development to a multi-storey car park, commercial units and homes on the site of St Mary’s temporary car park, near the Tesco store at Swansea Marina.
