The moment veteran Birkenhead MP Frank Field lost his seat

This was the moment one of the most well known faces in Merseyside politics lost his parliamentary seat.

Veteran MP Frank Field has lost his Birkenhead position after 40 years as the town’s MP.

Labour’s Mick Whitley won the seat by a comfortable margin and will become Birkenhead’s first new MP since 1979 when Parliament returns.

Mr Field came second on 7,285 votes, more than 17,000 adrift of Mr Whitley on 24,990.

Mr Field, a maverick who has never afraid to say what he thinks, was no-less straight talking tonight.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after his defeat, Mr Field said he wished his successor well, but said he has a “mega job” to do.

He added: “Anyone of those shadow cabinet [members] would have put forward a programme that Attlee and other Labour Prime Ministers would have been proud of and won.

“Boris Johnson holds the key to number 10 courtesy of Jeremy Corbyn.”

He also said Momentum should form their own party.

The victorious Labour candidate, Mick Whitley, said: “I would like in particular to thank Frank for his 40 years of service. He has always endeavoured to help and assist the people of this town.

“I’ve been delighted to speak to so many residents about their priorities for this town.”

Claire Rowles of the Conservatives came third with 5,540, ahead of the Lib Dem Stuart Kelly who got 1,620 votes, the Brexit Party’s Darren-Lee Lythgoe with 1,489 and Pat Cleary of the Greens who got 1,405.
