The moment two manhole covers explode on Gateshead road after torrential rain hit region

This is the moment two manhole covers explode on a busy Gateshead road.

The incident was caught on dash cam by Dan Charles, 22, who was travelling on Springwell Road, near Wrekenton Bus Link when the explosion happened.

A flash of fire and smoke can be seen pouring from the covers, which exploded on Sunday afternoon during torrential rain.

Dan, of Eighton Banks, who was driving back from his work at Heworth Leisure Centre, said: "I didn't realise one of the manhole covers was smoking like you can see in the video.

Next thing I hear is a loud bang, and see a flash of fire come up from the smoking manhole.

"Part of one of the manholes shoots up in the air before landing in the road.

"I pulled over to ring 101 and let them know, as there was smoke everywhere."

Dan, who also works as a pyrotechnician at weddings and events, said: "I work in the fireworks industry so I'm used to loud bangs and smoke, but not from manhole covers in the street."

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service sent one crew from Gateshead to the incident.

A spokesperson said it appeared to be a partially collapsed manhole with exposed electrical wires.
