The moment Sam Fender walks on stage to 'Local Hero' as he headlines This Is Tomorrow's final night

He’s done it before and, staying true to form, Sam Fender returned to home turf to the strains of Newcastle United anthem Local Hero on Sunday night.

The North Shields singer had the job of closing the third and final night of the Exhibition Park festival. after Fontaines DC brought the crowd's excitement to fever pitch.

He took to the stage just after 9pm to bring the curtain down on the delayed festival.

There wasn’t much wiggle room by the main stage as the lights went down to signal Sam’s arrival before a band decked out in NUFC shirts kicked off Local Hero.

The Mark Knopfler anthem was played in full before Sam made his entrance to launch into his own soon-to-be classic Will We Talk.

He told the This is Tomorrow crowd: “We always ask where the Geordies are. Normally there’s about 40 but now it’s all of uze.”

The Seventeen Going Under singer was closing the three-day This Is Tomorrow festival, which brought huge crowds to Exhibition Park.

The festival had been rescheduled after last year's dates had to be cancelled due to Covid-19.
