The moment riot cops moved in as yobs pelted them with fireworks - and the community cleaning up the next morning

This is the moment riot police moved in after cops were pelted with fireworks in last night's terrifying attack in Moston.

Police were called to reports of an assault on a female police officer just after 9.30pm on Friday (November 5) on Moston Lane.

Shortly after officers arrived, large groups of people starting throwing fireworks and other missiles at them. Up to 50 people were involved, GMP said.

In another short clip, a yob can be seen running away from oncoming cops.

Empty booze bottles and spent fireworks littered the stretch on Saturday morning.

One person, who lives on Birchenall Street, said: "I saw all the fireworks and then after maybe an hour people were fighting here and there was a lot of police.

"My little girl is afraid of fireworks and she was crying a lot, it was loud. And the kid next door was crying.

"There were a lot of police, four vans parked up outside here. There were a lot of youths.

"It just started with fireworks around here and then escalated to something else."

Another resident, who lives on Ebworth Street, said: "There was fighting, they were trying to confront the police.

"There were about 20 to 30 people involved and they all looked about 17 to 18.

"There was a lot of police, about 30 police officers I saw. The fireworks were being thrown at people."

Another person said: "I was around here last night, it turned into a riot.

"There was absolutely loads of police, a load of them were parked up on Moston Lane with their blue lights.

"It probably started off over something daft with the fireworks."

Pictures show officers stood in a line as fireworks hit the ground.

A number of items were seen discarded on the ground, including including a firework shell called 'sky massacre' and an extinguisher.

A dispersal order was in place overnight until 6.30am on Saturday.

Superintendent Helen Critchley, of GMPs City of Manchester district, said: "This has been a large scale disturbance involving a number of people throwing missiles not only at officers but at members of the public.

"In response to this disorder we have dispatched a large number of officers to the scene and we now have a dispersal order in place until 6.30am tomorrow morning. Officers will be remaining in the area over night as a precaution.

"This has been a multi-agency response from police, fire and the ambulance service and I would like to thank our emergency services colleagues for their assistance this evening.

"I would also like to thank members of the public for their patience while we continue to deal with this incident.

"As a result of this incident three officers have sustained injuries, thankfully these are minor injuries due to the quick response of their colleagues.

"GMP will not tolerate violence towards officers in the course of their duties".
