The moment off-road bikers abuse and throw stones at staff member after trespassing at closed off BikePark Wales

An employee at a Welsh mountain bike park was abused and assaulted by trespassers using the trails during the fire-break lockdown.

Video footage shows the moment off-road motorcyclists throw stones at a staff member at BikePark Wales in Merthyr Tydfil and tell him to "f**k off" after he approached them on the site on Sunday afternoon.

The popular park was forced to close when local lockdown restrictions were put in place in the borough on September 22.

The popular attraction was also closed between March and July due to the national lockdown rules earlier this year.

But park founder and director Martin Astley said they have been plagued by people using the closed park on quad bikes and off-road motorbikes on weekends, causing up to tens of thousands of pounds of damage.

Mr Astley said: "It has been a pretty devastating year for us. We have lost a huge amount of money, the business is in a really difficult position. And throughout both lockdowns we have had repeated problems with motorcyclists and quad bikers up on the mountain.

"It can cause damage to the trail but it's also a liability issue - if someone were to [get injured] we don't have first responders, they would have difficulty because they are behind closed gates.

"It's every week, every day at the weekend. The damage they cause easily runs into the tens of thousands.

"We are doing everything we can to stand by our employees but this could have a direct impact on livelihoods."

Describing the incident on Sunday, the director said: "Sunday was the worst we have had, there were a lot of them and the most worrying thing was the way they behaved when we approached them.

"They were speaking to the guy who does the trials, they were destroying his work so he handled it incredibly well. They were throwing stones at him so in the end he had to walk away."

In a statement shared with the video on Facebook, the BikePark said: "As if things aren’t difficult enough at the moment we are having to deal with this unspeakable behaviour on a daily basis now.

"This causes huge damage to our trails, damage that costs a lot of money and time to repair when the bike park is in a tough place. The world is hurting, people’s jobs are on the line and this complete lack of thought for others is beyond words."

Since Sunday's incident, Mr Martin said he has been in talks with South Wales Police, Merthyr council leader Kevin O'Neill and MP Gerald Jones about the issue.

He is now calling for a greater police presence in the area to deter trespassers when the park is not open. The facility will reopen on Friday, November 13 at weekends, serving Welsh customers only for the first two weeks due to lockdown rules in England.

He said: "We need to see a presence as it's happening so frequently. It's quite easy to know when and where to catch them. We need them to take decision action, the best thing they can do is seize the bikes. I do believe the police will support us."

Mr Martin added: "We're well aware that those riders don't represent off-road motorcyclists. We've had support from riders saying they are disgusted and how upset they are by those in the video. The last thing the world needs is more separation and division between different groups."

South Wales Police has been contacted for further information.
