The moment Liverpool loanee Rhian Brewster did a Paul Gascoigne at Rangers with ref prank in Preston vs Swansea City game

Rhian Brewster's start to his Swansea City career has been impressive.

A goal on his home debut in a 2-1 win over Wigan was well taken, and he followed that up with the equaliser at Deepdale this weekend as Swansea came back from one down to grab a share of the spoils against Alex Neil's Preston.

The youngster, signed from Liverpool until the end of the season, has adapted to the Championship quickly, and his abundant confidence oozes through his displays on the pitch.

And that was evident against the Lilywhites in an amusing scene reminiscent of the great Paul Gascoigne in his Rangers days.

Referee Geoff Eltringham dropped his yellow card at one stage in the second half, and helpful Brewster went to retrieve it for him.

He then runs up to the man in the middle and playfully brandishes the card at him, resulting in cheers from the Deepdale crowd.

Eltringham saw the funny side and acknowledged the young teenager by putting out his hand as a thank you.

It was a bit different for Gazza back in the 1990s.

A clash between his Glasgow side and Hibs in 1995 was whistled by Dougie Smith, who failed to see the funny side when Gascoigne picked up a card that the referee had dropped and brandished it to the official in a mock caution.

“He might be able to take the mick out of you, but he isn’t doing it to me," Smith was believed to have told a remonstrating Hibs player, before booking the former Spurs man.

Brewtser, who was cautioned during the game, said after the match: “That’s two goals in my four games for me now. I’ll take it. I’m just trying to help the team get promotion so anything I can do, I will,” he said.

“It wasn’t the cleanest of strikes; I just tried to get something on the ball because I knew it was an open goal, but they all count and I’ll take it.

“Hopefully, I can keep kicking on now. We’ve got a home game against Derby next week to look forward to.

“I’ll try to get another goal if I can and help the boys get the three points.

“There are no easy games in the Championship and we’ll prepare as much as we can to be ready.”
