The moment Judith Blake is sworn into House of Lords

Judith Blake has taken up her seat in the House of Lords.

Baroness Judith Blake, the former leader of Leeds City Council, was sworn in at just after 12pm on Thursday - the last day before both the House of Lords and Commons rise for the Easter recess.

In a short ceremony full of pomp and circumstance, Baroness Blake read out a short statement which said: "I, Judith, Baroness Blake of Leeds, do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Makesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors according to law."

Baroness Blake served as the first-ever female leader of Leeds city council from 2015. She was nominated to become a Labour life peer by party leader Sir Keir Starmer in December last year.

Her daughter Olivia sits in the Commons as the Labour MP for Sheffield Hallam.

The new leader of the council is James Lewis.
