The moment Jerome Garces managed to reach his family in the stands with a little help from his friends

"I get by with a little help from my friends..."

Or so The Beatles song goes.

It's just how referee Jerome Garces managed to reach his family after he made history by becoming the first Frenchman to referee a Rugby World Cup final on Saturday.

Garces was the man in the middle when South Africa won the Webb Ellis Cup for the third time after proving the more dominant and powerful side against Eddie Jones' England.

In the aftermath of the final whistle of many of the fixtures we've seen played out in this tournament, players and staff turn to their loved ones in the stands to either celebrate or commiserate.

And officials are no different.

After reffing the final, a touching picture shows Garces reaching his family in the stands from what looks like the tunnel - thanks to his fellow officials holding him up by his feet!

Garcès now has 56 Tests under his belt, and was the first Frenchman to take charge of a final, in what became his 11th Rugby World Cup match.

He was joined by Frenchman Romain Poite and New Zealander Ben O'Keeffe as assistant referees, along with Kiwi Ben Skeen as the TMO.
