The moment hero cleaner stops pensioner in a wheelchair from being mugged at a cashpoint

This is the moment a hero cleaner stopped a wheelchair-bound pensioner from being mugged at a cashpoint in Harpurhey.

CCTV footage shows the cleaner dragging the mugger away as he tries to snatch the elderly victim's money.

The 'disgusting' attack took place on the precinct at Harpurhey Shopping Centre just before 8am on Friday.

Security camera footage shows the mugger walk past the pensioner as he begins to use the ATM.

Apparently spotting an opportunity, the would-be thief circles back and waits behind him for the money to be dispensed.

He then reaches over his shoulder to try grab the notes.

Luckily a cleaner working a few yards away spots what's going on and rushes over to stop him.

The cleaner drags the mugger away, before he wriggles free and runs off.

Shopping centre manager Neil Lindsay praised the cleaner's bravery.

He said: " This attempted robbery is unacceptable, to prey on a vulnerable person whilst the country is facing an unprecedented crisis is without doubt one of the worst things I have seen.

"To carry out such an attack is not only an act of cowardice, but takes a depraved individual with no moral compass whatsoever.

"The incident has been reported to local authorities and I would hope that they use the full weight of the law to apprehend this individual.

"Individuals who believe that actions such as these are acceptable have no place in a civilised society."

Coun Pat Karney said: "This is one of the most disgusting things I have seen as a councillor in Harpurhey.

"It brings shame on the area that at a time of national emergency people are targeting vulnerable residents in this way.

"I will be asking the police to visit this man to see if we can get him before the courts."

It's understood the victim has declined to give a statement to police.

As a result officers say they are unable to pursue the case further, but patrols of the centre will be stepped up.
