The moment Glenn Hoddle knew Leeds United would light up Premier League

Glenn Hoddle knew Leeds United were going to light up the Premier League from the way Marcelo Bielsa's much-revered squad went toe-to-toe with Liverpool on the opening day.

Having already sealed a top-half finish in their first season back in the big time, the Whites are looking to end the campaign on a high against Championship-bound West Brom this afternoon.

Of course, it's a final day encounter which marks the return of 10,000 supporters to Elland Road after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Victory over the Baggies would see Bielsa's side finish the season on 59 points - while they are not mathematically out of the race for Europe just yet.

Either way, former England manager Hoddle - speaking as a pundit for BT Sport alongside Chris Sutton - says they deserve every bit of credit that comes their way.

Hoddle said: "I think they have been absolutely brilliant. It's the way they play, not just the results. If you can cast your mind back to the first game of the season at Anfield.

"They lost 4-3, but they actually gave Liverpool such a scare. They went toe to toe with all the top teams, they've had great results during the season, slowly but surely.

"At the beginning of the season, they were lacking that belief a little bit. They would either win 3-0 or lose 3-0.

"But as the season went on, they grew in confidence and they have gone toe to toe with the top teams. That has given them immense confidence.

"For them to possibly get 59 points this year is an amazing feat. For me, it's the way they play as well. So exciting."

Hoddle added: "Watching the FA Cup final, the crowd were in then and it was wonderful. It made the game look normal. There has not really been a normality about our football since the pandemic. It seems and feels like a first game of the season.

"The crowd's response when Leeds came out of the tunnel to warm up was just like a first game.

"You can feel the vibe here and even outside when we were getting into the ground. It's different to what we have experienced over the last 18 months. I think this place will be heard today, that is for sure."
