The moment four children are rescued from fast-flowing river by helicopter

Four children were winched to safety after they were found clinging to a rock in a fast-flowing river.

The drama unfolded on the River Rhondda, near Trehafod, at around 4.20pm on Sunday (February 27).

A coastguard helicopter, which is based at St Athan, was called to rescue three of the children who had got stuck on a rock, and a fourth who had made it to a precarious position on the other side of the river bank.

A winchman was lowered from a coastguard helicopter to lift the children to safety before they were treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

An air ambulance was also sent while South Wales Fire and Rescue used specialist boat rescue teams to try and help.

Video footage shows the helicopter hovering overhead as emergency crews on the river bank spoke to the children.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “At shortly after 4.30pm, the coastguard helicopter from St Athan was sent, at the request of the Welsh Ambulance Service, to assist four children in difficulty, clinging onto rocks by fast-flowing water at Trehafod, Rhondda Cynon Taf, near Pontypridd.

“The helicopter located all children and winched them to safety before passing the children into the care of ambulance service teams at the scene. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service also assisted in the rescue.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue said that "multiple crews" from across south Wales went to the the scene and worked alongside other emergency service crews.
