The moment a snake appeared out of the bushes at Cardiff's Roath Park

A teenager described her shock after spotting a snake while she was walking in a Cardiff park.

Rubie Baker, 19, caught the moment on camera as she went to take a closer look at the snake which at that point was on the ground behind some metal railings in Roath Park on Saturday.

But as Rubie went to take a closer look, the snake quickly moved forward onto the pavement and Rubie screamed and jumped back.

Rubie was walking past when she saw the red and brown corn snake and decided to take a closer look. She put her hand through the railings to get closer when the snake moved forward onto the pavement.

Rubie, from Thornhill , said: "We were just walking past and there were a few people taking photos of the bushes and we got a bit closer.

"As I was getting a bit closer it did that.

"I was very close to it when it came out. I'm okay with snakes but it did freak me out a bit. I screamed and ran into the road."

Rubie said she was walking past the railings at around 3.30pm when she saw the crowd gathered around the "huge" snake.

She said: "There was one woman there who was really freaked out by it and telling people to get out of there."

Vets issue venomous snake attack warning to dog owners

The support worker said a number of people watching called 101 to get help.

On Twitter, Urban Park Rangers shared a video of the reptile wrapped around a ranger's hand after they rescued it. They believe it is a lost pet.

They said: "An unusual visitor to the park today. Lost Corn Snake retrieved from Roath Park. Please DM us if he belongs to you!"

Corn snakes originate from North America but have become popular pets in the UK because they are considered generally docile and easy to care for.

They live for six to eight years in the wild and male corn snakes can grow up to 1.8m.

If the snake belongs to you, you can contact Urban Park Rangers on  Twitter .
