The moment a seagull swallows another bird whole in Cardiff

A man from Llandaff was taken aback when a seagull landed in his garden and ate another bird whole.

Richard Davey, 72, was sitting in his home in Llandaff when he noticed the bird.

He said: "I was sitting in my chair when I saw a seagull fly into the garden with something in its beak.

"On taking another look I could see that it was another bird which appeared to be already dead. The gull continued to shake it and peck at it for a short while and then, after several attempts, swallowed it whole. You could still see the bulge in the gull’s throat as it flew off.

"I have never seen anything like it.

"I had my camera handy so I just snapped away."

These picture show what happened:

According to gull expert Peter Rock, the explosion in the population of gulls in Cardiff is unsurprising and we have essentially rolled the red carpet out for them.

"Town offers a safe place," said Mr Rock last year, who has long studied the birds and has tagged many in the city.

"There are few predators . It is 4-6°C warmer in the town than the countryside, which allows breeding earlier in the year.

"We have given them the invitation to breed in the town."
