The moment a law-abiding great-great-gran was 'arrested' - as a special treat

A law-abiding great-great-gran from north Manchester was 'arrested' by neighbourhood police officers as a special treat - because she wanted to "do something naughty".

Josie Birds, from Moston , was handcuffed and bundled into a police van, during the staged arrest.

The 92-year-old was then escorted to Harpurhey police station.

Josie has failing health and wanted to experience being arrested before it was too late, her granddaughter Pam Smith said.

"She's been a good girl all her life, she wanted to do something naughty. She's a character. She wanted to know what it was like to be on the wrong side of the law", Pam said.

"She sat in her chair one day and said 'do you know what? I want to be arrested'.

"I don't know where it's come from, she's never broken the law."

Pam said her gran loves watching cop shows like CSI, NCIS, and Inspector Morse, which might explain be why she wanted to star in her own police drama.

The widow, who has 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, was picked up by officers on Saturday.

The cops arrived at Josie's door and made up a fictional scenario for an arrest, saying Josie had been caught 'robbing the Co-op'.

But quick-thinking Josie replied that she doesn't shop there - the perfect alibi for any sophisticated criminal.

The officers then tried to put the handcuffs loosely on Josie, but her wrists are so dainty that they fell off, Pam said.

They put their suspect into a police van and took her to Harpurhey station on Moston Lane.

She asked if she was going into a cell, but the officers said they were going to treat her to tea and cake instead.

"She loved it. She was thrilled to bits. Everyone keeps saying she's a wrong'un. Police said they were glad to have helped," Pam added.

Proud Pam said her gran, who worked hard all her life - at manufacturing firms like Avro, Hawker Siddeley, and Ferranti, has a 'heart of gold'.

"She loves looking after people. She's always putting other people first. She takes everything in her stride", she said.

Pam posted about the experience on her Twitter account - and has had around 1,000 likes and scores of comments.

"This has genuinely made my day. Thanks for sharing!", Ollie Manco replied.

While Hayley Banks added: "This is fantastic. Best wishes to your Gran."
