A legend’s legacy

John Prine’s family celebrates the late singer-songwriter’s legacy with “Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine,” a live stream beginning at 6:30 p.m. June 11. Featured family members and friends will share memories and songs while raising money for several charities. James Joyce

Bloom and friends

Fans of James Joyce can join in the annual Bloomsday on Broadway event at New York’s Symphony Space, being held online this year and featuring a free marathon reading of “Ulysses,” by a long list of actors and authors. (Each year, Joyce aficionados celebrate June 16, known as Bloomsday, as Joyce’s epic novel, “Ulysses,” takes place over one day, June 16, 1904, and the protagonist is named Leopold Bloom.) This year’s readers include Stephen Colbert, Brian Cox, Hugh Dancy, Claire Danes, Kate Mulgrew, Cynthia Nixon, Fiona Shaw, Dan Stevens, Colum McCann, Denis O’Hare and more. Art history lesson

While the Art Institute of Chicago is temporarily closed to the public, art lovers can still dive into the current exhibit, “El Greco: Ambition and Defiance,” via a variety of online offerings. Viewers can check out a short video tour, download the exhibit’s audio tour, read scholarly articles and a timeline of the masterful painter’s life and join an interactive feature which chronicles the origin and recent conservation of the Art Institute’s own El Greco: “The Assumption of the Virgin.” Stream through June 21 at artic.edu.

South Asian arts

Artists of various disciplines are showcased in the virtual Mandala Makers Festival (7-9 p.m. June 13-14), which presents emerging artists working within and beyond South Asian traditions and culture. Presented by Mandala South Asian Performing Arts, the performers take part in a combination of live and prerecorded presentations, artist talkbacks and Q&A’s. They include poet and movement artist Natalia Neha Khosla, storyteller Jitesh Jaggi, Carnatic singer Sandeep Bharadwaj, movement artist Tuli Bera, bansuri (a South Asian flute) performer Chethan Anant, Indian classical dance with Ameya Performing Arts and more. Red Clay Dance Company

Dancing to health

Red Clay Dance Company is offering the Dance Pamoja Challenge, a free online project that focuses on the fight against Covid-19 in the African-American community. (Pamoja is Swahili for “together.”) “Dance is a great form of exercise to include in anyone’s health management program,” says artistic director Vershawn Sanders-Ward, adding the program will “help people keep movement in their lives while avoiding the risk of infection.” In addition to dance classes, participants can take part in a blood pressure/blood sugar study and nutrition coaching. Broadway at home

Lincoln Center’s free Broadway Fridays series (part of Lincoln Center at Home) continues with two works from its repertoire: Douglas Carter Beane’s dark comedy “The Nance” (8 p.m. June 12), starring Tony Award winner Nathan Lane as a 1930s burlesque performer in a changing world, and “Act One” (June 19), James Lapine’s adaptation of Moss Hart’s memoir starring Tony Shalhoub, Andrea Martin and Santino Fontana. Take a walk

The Chicago Botanic Garden has reopened with access to a 2.3-mile loop of the garden, which allows for safe social distancing. The path takes visitors past the North Lake and offers views of the Japanese garden and close-ups of spring blooms. All buildings will be closed. Visitors must preregister for timed entry. The Andersonville business community celebrates Midsommarfest, the traditional Swedish holiday, with a virtual party and fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. June 12.
