New ITV drama about infamous canoe man fraud scandal to recreate Mirror newsroom

The Mirror newsroom is being recreated for an ITV drama based on back-from-the-dead canoe man John Darwin.

The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe will feature our Canary Wharf HQ as we uncovered the £1 million fraud by John, now 70, and his then-wife Anne, 69.

It will also feature our headline “Canoe’s this in Panama?” on December 5, 2007, over a photo of the couple in an estate agent’s office there.

The photo exposed their lies and led to their arrests and six-year terms for fraud.

It emerged days after John had returned from Panama. He claimed he had amnesia as he handed himself in at a police station in London.

Anne had said she thought he was dead after reporting him missing at sea in a canoe accident in 2002.

She claimed life insurance, mortgage and pension payouts as he moved into a secret room next door.

In the drama, Mirror Associate Picture Editor Derek Momodu is seen sending ex-Mirrorman David Leigh the damning image after he finds Anne in Panama. As he showed her the photo she knew the game was up.

The newsroom will also feature as Cleveland police ask for details of Anne’s whereabouts.

Actress Monica Dolan started filming the drama in Seaton Carew, Co Durham, this week.

Eddie Marsan plays John in the four-part drama series from Story Films, written by Unforgotten creator Chris Lang.
