'The miracle has happened': Man United fans react to Michael Carrick's first lineup vs Villarreal

Manchester United fans have had their say on Michael Carrick's first line-up as life after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer begins with a crunch Champions League clash.

Carrick takes charge for the first time since Solskjaer's sacking on Sunday, a 4-1 defeat at Watford proving to be the final straw for the board who quickly installed the midfielder-turned-coach on a caretaker basis before looking for an interim boss and then a permanent manager.

However, Solskjaer's long-term successor could be hired sooner than expected, with the club confident they can appoint Mauricio Pochettino as the PSG boss is interested in making a return to the Premier League.

Other names in the frame include Zinedine Zidane, Brendan Rodgers and Erik ten Hag, but Pochettino has emerged as the clear favourite to replace Solskjaer.

For the time being though, Carrick will take charge of the side, and he faces a huge task in his first game in charge.

United are this evening in Spain as they take on Villarreal in their penultimate group game in the Champions League, with their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages still firmly in the balance.

They sit top of Group F, but are level on points with tonight’s opponents, and could drop to third if they suffer a defeat, with Atalanta also in action against Young Boys.

Carrick has named his first side as he begins life without Solskjaer, and he's already made a couple of big calls, with Donny van de Beek - perpetually out of favour under Solskjaer - starting as Bruno Fernandes drops to the bench, with Alex Telles and Anthony Martial also making the line-up.

And the sight of Van de Beek getting a rare start has certainly caught the attention of supporters. Here’s a selection of the reactions from United’s fans to tonight’s team news.

A win in Spain this evening would not only represent the ideal start to Carrick’s spell in charge, but could see them qualify for the knockout stages should Atalanta slip up against Young Boys.

With a final group game against Young Boys still to come, victory in both games would see them qualify as group winners.
