Less than a month after being cancelled by Fox, the Mindy Project has been given a new lease on life by online streaming site Hulu, which has ordered a 26-episode fourth season of the cult show.
The move isn’t that much of a surprise as Hulu was mentioned as a possible new home for the sitcom, which stars Mindy Kaling, as soon as Fox announced the decision to cancel it. The site has also hosted episodes of the show since 2012.
“Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship,” said Craig Erwich, senior vice-president and head of content at Hulu.
He added: “With so many of her fans already catching up and tuning in to the series on Hulu, we know her millions of fans will be eager to find out what Mindy has in store for the next chapter.”
Kaling added that she was thrilled with the move and her show now follows in the footsteps of others such as Arrested Development and Community that have found a second life on online streaming sites after being cancelled by cable and network channels.
The Mindy Project acquisition sees Hulu add to their slate of forthcoming shows with other projects such as Stephen King’s and JJ Abrams’s “event series” 11/22/63 and the Amy Poehler-helmed Difficult People already announced by the site.
