The millions made in profit from hospital parking in Leeds last year

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust raked in nearly £3.5m profit from its car parks last year, according to the latest data.

Stats from NHS Digital show the organisation had a gross income of £2.1m in 2018/19 from parking for patients and visitors.

And it also brought in £2m from parking for staff.

It cost a total of £0.6m to provide parking at the trust's sites last year.

This means the profit from car parks in £3.4m last year though the trust says this is then re-invested back into patient care.

It costs an average of £1.4 per hour for patients and visitors to park at Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital.

Parking charges decreased last year - down from an average of £1.4.

Staff pay 19p per hour on average at the trust's hospitals, down from 19p per hour in 2017/18.

Staff are more likely to have parking permits - so, for example, if they are paying £2.40 a day, that would equate to 10p per hour.

The trust does not charge for disabled parking.

Chapel Allerton Hospital had the next most expensive parking locally, with patients and visitors charged an average of £1.35 per hour, while it was £1 per hour at Wharfedale General Hospital.

Across England, NHS trusts saw a gross income of £185.6m in 2018/19 from parking for patients and visitors, and £86.2 million from parking for staff.

This is the total amount received from parking, including fines and parking permits.

It does not include PFI, management or running costs.

Car parking services across England’s trusts cost £71.2m to provide.

This includes leases, staffing, maintenance, external contracts, as well as attributable directors' and senior managers' costs.

Overall, NHS car parks made £200.6m in profits after the costs of providing parking services were taken into account.

Out of 1,138 trust sites across England, 357 (or 31 per cent) charge patients for parking.

Hospital sites, however, where much more likely to charge patients for parking.
