New rules limiting how much agents can earn from transfers could save clubs millions of pounds a season.
FIFA is set to approve new proposals today which will limit the amount of money agents can earn from transfers.
Agent commissions are expected to be capped at 3% for clubs that are buying and 6% for those that are selling.
Chelsea spent a whopping £79.3m on agent fees between 2015/16 and 2018/19 - the only seasons for which data is available. That works out as 8% of the amount coming in and out of the club in transfer fees.
It’s not possible to say how much of the agent fees were from buying or selling players, but had they been capped at the upper level of 6% then the club would only have had to pay agents just £56.9m.
That’s a saving of £22.4m over four seasons, or £5.6m a season.
Arsenal, meanwhile, spent a whopping £35m on agent fees between 2015/16 and 2018/19, which works out as 8% of the amount coming in and out of the club in transfer fees too.
Again it’s not possible to say how much of the agent fees were from buying or selling players, but had they been capped at the upper level of 6% then the club would only have had to pay agents just £25.4m - a saving of £9.6m over four seasons, or £2.4m a season.
West Ham and Crystal Palace spent 10% of the amount coming in and out of the club on agents' fees.
