A cosmic banger is on the way — space nerds are calling it the meteor shower of the year, and it’s hitting tonight! The Perseids are one of the brightest and busiest meteor showers out there, with NASA saying you could catch up to 100 shooting stars an hour.
The universe really do giveth. And we, as lil earthlings, are more than happy to taketh!
Meteor showers are hugely exciting for stargazers everywhere, whether you’re keen on the astronomy side of things or if you’re an astrology girlie and want to tap into its energy. Speaking of which, at the end of this piece you’ll find a bunch of rituals to help you take advantage of the cosmic power. You’re welcome!
Whichever angle you’re shooting from, you’ll find all the answers you seek below…
When will the meteor shower reach peak visibility?
This sky show hits every year — in 2025, it’s running from July 17 to August 23, so mark your calendars.
The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak on August 12, while the Delta Aquariids will peak on Monday, July 28 and the Alpha Capricornids will sparkle in the sky on Wednesday, July 30.
How to watch the meteor shower in Australia
Bad news for Aussies — the weather forecast isn’t vibing, so catching the show might be a bit of a struggle.
“The Perseids (are) very much best seen in the northern hemisphere, because basically, roughly from the north is where the direction of the comet debris is coming from,” Monash University observational astronomer and associate professor Michael Brown told Nine.
“So while they’re visible in the northern parts of Australia, they aren’t really visible from the southern parts of Australia.”
Your best chance is to peep the Delta Aquariids, which might bless us with up to 20 shooting stars an hour. The Alpha Capricornids are more low-key — only about two to five meteors an hour — but they’ll be super bright and totally worth the watch.
Astronomers advise to park yourself outdoors “the hour or two before sunrise” in a spot ideally away from the city, between 12:00 a.m. AEST and 4:00 a.m. AEST.
He advises: “Just look north.”
Any major lights will obscure the sky and lower your chances of actually seeing the meteor shower in July 2025.
Missed tonight’s shower? Not to worry, the Perseids meteor shower will kick on over the next month and peak around August 12 or 13.
What is a meteor shower?
Meteor showers are an annual cosmic event that involves debris falling from comets and scattering across the sky in a gorgeous series of lights.
When those rogue rocks from space land in the Earth’s atmosphere, the resistance from the air causes them to heat up, which, in turn, makes the air glow around them, resulting in a meteor shower.
Again, this is a regular event but for all the deets on the meteor shower in July 2025, you’ll find everything you need in this article.
How many meteors can you expect to see?
1. Southern Delta Aquariids

What causes the Southern Delta Aquariids?
Southern Delta Aquariids, one of the two meteor showers hitting tonight, is thought to be from the comet 96P/Machholz.
FYI: meteor showers are caused by debris falling from comets that scatter across the sky for us earthlings to enjoy.
So when you look up at the meteor shower 2025, you’ll know that what you’re seeing is discarded fragments of the comet 96P/Machholz.
2. Alpha Capricornids
The Alpha Capriconids will peak on Wednesday, July 30.
What causes the Alpha Capricornids?
As mentioned earlier, meteor showers are the result of debris dropping from comets.
To be specific, the Alpha Capricornids are fallen bits of the comet 169P/NEAT.
Indeed. NEAT!

In terms of specific rituals, here’s what I would recommend…
Manifestation rituals
Any mystic worth their Himalayan Salt will know which methods are best for their personal manifestations.
Whatever that may be for you — whether it’s candle magic, journalling, etc etc — go ahead and do so tonight!
Love spells
Meteor showers are considered to be ~romantic~ spiritual occasions – love energy abounds us tonight!
Incorporate rose quartz crystals, rose petals and lavender oil into your evening.
Wish-fulfilment rituals
This could be staring up at the meteor showers and making a wish when you first spot it, as you would with a shooting star.
Or you could write your goals and wishes on a bay leaf and burn it. Bay leaves aren’t just good to spice up a tasty dish, they also contain special attracting powers that can carry your wishes off into the universe so they will be answered.
Aight, that’s it from me. Enjoy the meteor shower madness, my friends!
