The Met Office verdict on reports of snow as early as this month and throughout the winter

There are reports that snow could hit the UK as early as this month with the coldest winter in 60 years looming.

Some forecasters have suggested a colder than average winter blighted by 'extreme cold weather events'.

A report on The Mirror quotes Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden who warns of 'snow after snow' with the first flakes coming this month.

December could see the worst conditions, he claims, as weather systems from the Atlantic clash with cold stagnated air over the UK.

Wales will take a while to forget the Met Office red warning for snow which saw parts of south Wales blanketed with feet deep white stuff and drifts half way up the side of some houses in March, 2018.

Last year, October started off mild and became more unsettled as the month drew to a close.

The UK did experience some snow and hail last October, though this was mainly on higher ground in northern England and Scotland.

However, commenting on the snow suggestions, the Met Office said this month might actually be slightly warmer than average.

A spokesman said there was no suggestion at this stage that Wales would have a repeat of March, 2018.

He said there was "no sign" of any snowy weather so far, although it was looking quite unsettled in the next few weeks.

"Reports of snow in October did not come from us," he said.

"In late October and early November, there will be some dry weather and frost - not anything out of the ordinary for this time of year.

"At the moment, the forecast for this time of year is warmer than average."

There might not be snow on the horizon, but there is more wet and windy weather to come in October.

Storm Lorenzo is said to have "largely fizzled out". But although some drier and brighter spells are likely, these may be short-lived.

According to the Met Office, it is too early to predict the weather for the rest of the winter.
