The Met Office's verdict on the return of the Beast from the East

A forecast bitter winter with the so-called Beast from the East set to hit the UK were reported this weekend.

The grim outlook comes from research at University College London (UCL) which shows January and February next year will shiver in the coldest temperatures in the past seven years, and the seventh coldest in the past three decades.

However, the Met Office said such suggestions were quite unlikely, and it was way too early to tell.

A forecaster told Hull Live : "It is too early to call. Most winter conditions, you would expect it to be cold at times.

"It's far too early to put temperatures on conditions. Over the course of winter, it will get cold.

"In terms of any Beast from the East returning, we won’t be able to tell until nearer the time.

"I would say it’s quite unlikely.

"From a Met Office perspective, we are not issuing anything saying there will be a Beast from the East returning."

The forecaster also cast doubt on the predictions for an Indian summer, saying: "I would probably question that.

"I think you are not really looking at the hottest September ever.

"Toward the middle and end of next week, there are some weather systems coming in and they will bring some warmer conditions with them but I wouldn't expect them to be record-breaking temperatures.

"The hottest September recorded was 35.6C in Bawtry. I wouldn't say we will get anywhere near that."
