The Met Office is asking you to name the next storm - here's how

Scotland is battered by a number of storms every year - and it's not just in winter.

And now the Met Office is offering people the chance to get involved and name the next storms.

Every storm in the UK and Ireland is named, in the past we have had Storm Deirdre, Storm Erik and Storm Freya. (Hurricane Bawbag doesn't count unfortunately)

The Met Office has been offering the public the chance to name storms since 2015, and so far over 10,000 names have been received.

People can send in suggestions on the Met Office's social media channels - Twitter, Facebook and Instagram - as well as emailing suggestion.

Derrick Ryall, Associate Director of Public Weather Service at the Met Office said: “In addition to Met Office weather warnings, the storm naming scheme has been proved to raise awareness of severe weather in the UK, providing a consistent message to the public and crucially helping people to make better decisions so they can stay safe and thrive.”

The storm names for 2019/2020 will be announced in early September.
