The Met Office forecast for the bank holiday weekend in Wales

Wet and windy weather kicking off the final May bank holiday weekend will give way to sunshine by Monday.

Though lockdown measures continue in Wales, anyone planning a garden barbecue or their weekend exercise regime will want to hold out Sunday or Monday.

According to the Met Office, unsettled weather is in store through Saturday at least.

National forecast for May 22

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: “Friday will be a cooler and more unsettled day for most as an Atlantic low pressure system moves to the northwest of the UK, replacing the warm air we’ve had for much of this week with fresher westerlies."

The system will bring a spell of strong winds and a risk of gales as high as 60mph to parts of north Wales, he said.

"Along with strong winds, some rain is expected followed by showers, heaviest across north-western parts of the UK,” he added.

Saturday will begin with scattered showers and strong winds, before easing into more tranquil conditions by evening.

Temperatures will reach a high of 16C, though the wind will make the air feel colder.

As the area of low pressure moves away to the north, there are signs that more settled conditions will develop through the latter half of the weekend.

By Sunday, largely unsettled weather is forecast to be replaced by sunny spells.

A light shower is possible for some, though a generally dry and pleasant day is in store.

Maximum temperatures in Wales will be in the upper teens on Monday (Met Office)

Come the bank holiday on Monday, dry conditions with temperatures in the upper teens will create the perfect day for garden barbecues and outdoor exercise.
