The Met Office forecast as 80 mph winds to batter Wales next week

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind as gusts up to 80mph are set to threaten a widespread area of Wales on Monday.

The weather warning, which is likely to disrupt travel across the region, is set to come into effect at 12pm and last until just before midnight.

Forecasters said: "An area of very strong winds will move eastwards across the UK through Monday afternoon and evening, clearing eastwards overnight.

"The strongest winds are expected around exposed coasts and hills in the west of the UK."

In these areas, gusts of 60-70 mph are likely, with a few sites set to experience gusts as high as 80 mph.

Meanwhile, inland locations will be more likely to experience gusts of 45-55 mph.

As the winds continue to pummel the warning area, which stretches from Bangor to Cardiff, a narrow band of heavy rain will move eastward across the country.

This could lead to additional hazards into Tuesday morning.

For the duration the warning, delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely as well as short-term loss of power and other services.

Drivers of high-sided vehicles are advised to avoid exposed routes and bridges.

The areas affected by the warning include:

Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Swansea, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan
