The Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Trying the trends

Met costume ball: Diane Kruger at the Costume Institute Benefit gala
Diane Kruger – new minimalism

Proof that it’s super hard to pull off next season’s minimalism, no matter how brilliantly cut your Calvin Klein dress might be. A high, round neck and long sleeves are often judged daring in red-carpet terms, but somehow the dress has ended up looking like a half-finished bridal toile

Chloë Sevigny – wrongness

On paper, a polo-necked, long-sleeved, teal lace skating dress sounds like a red-carpet train wreck. But if anyone can morph wrongness into fashion-forwardness, it’s Chloë Sevigny. High fives for her and her Proenza Schouler dress

Tina Fey – the jumpsuit

I can’t recall ever seeing a jumpsuit on the red carpet in Hollywood – maybe it’s considered Oscar blasphemy or something, but in the fashion world no one bats an eyelid at a non-dress. The idea works, as the shape is both elegant and sassy; just a shame it wasn’t more dramatic somehow

Met costume ball: Katy Perry at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit
Katy Perry – the tricksy number

The Met may be the place to trial fashion concepts, as opposed to fashion cliches, but we have to draw the line at Katy Perry’s LED gown. So her dress has fairy lights sewn into it and she glows in the dark – whatevs. What with that and the diamante zigzag necklace, she makes Katie Price in a ballgown look tasteful

Met costume ball: Carey Mulligan at the Met Ball
Carey Mulligan – giant lace

Lace is a trend with tenacity. Having built up momentum over the last couple of years, it has now reached its fashion comfort level. Thus, dyed giant lace should pack a reasonable fashion punch on the red carpet. But is it just us, or do the short hem and patch pockets make Mulligan’s dress look less Miu Miu, more Kookai?

Met costume ball: Kirsten Dunst attends the Costume Institute Gala Benefit
Kirsten Dunst – high street

Well, not quite, but Dunst is wearing a dress designed by the US label Rodarte, which made the gown for Gap, the sponsors of this gala event. Sadly, it’s a one-off and won’t be sold in-store. Perhaps it’s just as well: a wonky lace hemline and white ankle boots is just too Rodeo Bride for our liking

Met costume ball: Gisele Bundchen at the Costume Institute Gala Benefit
Gisele Bündchen – haute rock

Ten points awarded for the fashion gamble, 100 points deducted for the dodgy outcome. Even a supermodel can’t make a cut-out black leather mini-dress with an uneven fringed hem work outside a lapdancing club. Proof that designer Alexander Wang has mastered the off-duty model look, but still has a way to go before he should be let loose on the red carpet

Met costume ball: Sienna Miller at the Costume Institute Gala Benefit
Sienna Miller – bondage shoes

Sienna Miller’s Pucci dress is cut to emphasise the fact that her ankle-strapped heels are the main event. They are a tad too fashiony for a traditional Hollywood red carpet, but in trend terms demure kitten heels have the Big Mo right now – which means that, unfortunately, Miller scores a miss at the Met

Met costume ball: Rachel Zoe attends the Costume Institute Gala Benefit
Rachel Zoe – yellow

Has Cleggmania reached NYC? Lib Dem yellow was a mini-trend at Monday-night’s gala. Yellow has had its big moment on mainstream red carpets, too, but Zoe’s Marc Jacobs velvet dress has a grunge feel, which is more unusual. Either that, or she’s wearing a dress that is too big for her

Met costume ball: Kate Hudson at the Costume Institute Gala Benefit
Kate Hudson – neutrals

The shade has at least a dozen names – blush, oyster, cafe latte. Pale neutrals are spring’s big story, which means a neutral dress should score points at fashion’s big night out. Sadly, the shade is also now a too-safe event cliche. But Hudson’s feminine and chic Stella McCartney dress is lovely, even so
