The mess that's still outside City Hall two months after Winter Wonderland closed

Weeks of bad weather have hampered the Winter Wonderland clean up operation in front of City Hall.

The lawn in front of the iconic Cardiff building is still a muddy mess.

With storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge hitting Wales during the wettest February on record, it has been too wet to lay the new turf.

But it is hoped that with the weather improving, work will be able to start later this month.

Cardiff council said on social media: "The work was commenced prior to storm Ciara and Dennis, however parks confirmed that the progress was severely hampered by the adverse weather conditions.

"Having liaised with the appointed contractor, they are looking to commence re-turfing in the next two weeks."

The team at Winter Wonderland said: "The adverse weather conditions over the past few months have meant we have had extreme difficulty with re-turfing the land where we house Winter Wonderland each year.

"We have had regular meetings with both Cardiff Council and site contractors to decide on how and when best to re-turf the site, where it was decided we wait until the condition of the ground improves and turf can successfully be laid when weather conditions are drier.

"Every year we ensure that the site is handed back to the Council in top condition, and this year will be no different."

The situation has lead to some people calling for it to be moved to another part of the city.

One person on social media described it as looking "desolate" and asked if there was alternative venue in the city for the winter fair, like Roald Dahl pass.

Brodie's Coffee Company, which has a venue in the gardens next to the lawn, said on social media: "The popularity (of Winter Wonderland) has led to the understandable need to expand but this may make a new venue altogether the more sensible and sustainable solution for the city?"

Whitchurch councillor Mike Phillips said he would pass the suggestions on, but added: "It’s a bit exceptional with the rain this year though, and I wonder how much additional passing footfall it picks up from city centre workers and shoppers that would be missed if it were in the bay."
