The mess left in the wake of dramatic police chase following carjacking - a man tried desperately to cling onto his Vauxhall

A man has been arrested after a carjacking sparked a dramatic police chase through Bury.

Officers were called to Walmersley Road in Fernhill just before 7.30pm on Monday following reports of a robbery.

The victim, 39-year-old man, ended up in hospital after trying desperately to cling onto his Vauxhall Insignia as it was driven away by the thief.

Police managed to track the stolen car further down Walmersley Road and a chase followed.

The patrol car was rammed several times by the Insignia on Birch Street and Hornby Street.

A number of parked vehicles were also damaged, before officers managed to bring the car to a stop.

A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving.

He remains in custody for questioning.

GMP released images showing the damage to both the patrol car and Insignia following the chase.

It is understood the vehicle will be off the road for some time.

Hornby Street and surrounding streets were taped off while investigation work was carried out.

They have since reopened.

A spokesman for GMP confirmed the victim had since been discharged from hospital.

There were no other injuries.
