The 'mesmerising' Scottish museum that is one of Europe's quirkiest and oddest

A "mesmerising" and "fascinating" museum in Scotland has been named one of the most quirky in Europe.

The attraction, which is also one of the oldest museums in the UK, has been praised as a fantastic place to learn about the history of medicine.

Surgeons' Hall Museums on Edinburgh's Nicolson Street was opened in its current form in 1832 and is now a category A listed building.

Discussing the location, which was named alongside museums like the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft and Museo Atlántico in Spain, easyJet said the collection here includes real human remains and is a great window into the "changing nature of medical and scientific teaching and research since the late 18th century."

The Scottish museum has also proven popular with visitors over the years, with users on Tripadvisor giving the spot a 4.6/5 out of 1,927 reviews.

One person said: "We loved this museum. It was actually a tad graphic, so use your discretion for children.

"I’ve been to quite a few science museums and have never seen anything like it. There were rows and rows of crazy things to look at.

"It is split into different sections (dentistry, pathology, women’s studies). One of my favourite things was the laparoscopic Da Vinci that you could play with."

This person added: "What a fascinating museum - it was truly mesmerising seeing all of the specimens and learning about the history of medicine/surgery.

"I ended up visiting for three hours, meaning I had a lot less time to fully explore Edinburgh - oh well. No photos, though, alas."

A third wrote: "Don’t miss it. It might not be the top-most attraction in Edinburgh, but it is VERY interesting and worth the time. History itself is worth the visit."

The easyJet ranking was voted on by 2000 British travellers, with the Surgeons' Hall Museum receiving 15% of the ballots cast.
