The Merseyside areas where burglars get away with it almost every time

Hardly any burglaries were solved in some parts of Merseyside last year.

A Liverpool Echo investigation has uncovered the council wards in our region where burglars get away with it nearly all of the time.

Official statistics show there were eight political wards in the region where at least 90% of burglary investigations between May 2018 and last month ended with no suspect being identified by the police.

And across Merseyside as a whole, 81% of investigations were completed with no suspect ever found.

The statistics were compiled from crime records listed on the Police UK website.

West Midlands Police was the worst force in the country when it came to catching burglars, while Greater Manchester Police was second worst.

Police Federation of England and Wales’ operational lead Simon Kempton, said significant investment from central government was needed to help police forces cope with the strain on their services.

He said: “Our members are trying to meet growing demand with dwindling numbers and we simply cannot do everything we once could, or that the public expect us to do, therefore forces are having to prioritise and be realistic about what they can and can’t investigate until the Government starts to take the service seriously.

“We also know that in some areas forces are struggling to answer 999 calls, neighbourhood officers are being pushed into response roles and frontline officers are made to undertake investigative work due to a shortage in detectives."
