The mental strength Rangers need to prove they really can last title race pace with Celtic - watch our top team

When Jonny Hayes added an injury-time second for Celtic at Ibrox you couldn't have imagined that six weeks later Rangers would be top of the league.

But a storming win over Hamilton mixed with Livingston's victory against Celtic means Rangers go into the international break two points clear of their rivals.

It's the first time this season they've managed to top the table but there's still a lot of work to be done.

Last season when Rangers looked to be on the up, they invariably failed to follow it up. First they went top of the table with a 2-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle and were then beaten by Aberdeen at Ibrox three days later. Ryan Jack's winner against Celtic to go level on points at the top was followed up by an infamous Joe Worrall mistake in a 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock.

Those were the games that meant Rangers couldn't be involved in a title battle despite threatening to be and on this week's Back Page video, Gavin Berry and Jonny McFarlane explain why it is so vital to change that narrative this time around.

Gavin said: "Psychologically it's huge, especially going into the international break. When you think of the contrast of the last international break when they lost the Old Firm derby at Ibrox going into that. Everyone felt it was a huge moment in the title race where everyone is looking at Celtic, they've gone to Ibrox and thinking it's going to be the same old story.

"Had Rangers slipped up again after that - remember they were trailing against Livingston at Ibrox in the next game - before Celtic did then suddenly you're looking at a game where Celtic will disappear into the horizon.

"It's totally flipped, Celtic have dropped five points drawing to Hibs and losing at Livingston, Rangers - to their credit - have won four on the bounce. Steven Gerrard spoke about that block of four games and taking 12 points and they've done it.

"It's huge psychologically but it's what happens now that is vital because if you think back to last season when they briefly went top of the league, Celtic were in Betfred Cup action and had a game in hand, Rangers went to Tynecastle and won then a few days later lost at home to Aberdeen.

"Then when they won the Old Firm game at Ibrox in the festive period they went level on points, Celtic still had a game more to play but it was a big moment psycologically. People thought Rangers would kick on then after the winter break they lose to Kilmarnock so they didn't have the ability.

"They've learned from that. Steven Gerrard said they're stronger. I think they are stronger mentally and they have more quality in their squad to deal with it. But we won't know until after the international break when they go to Tynecastle which now becomes a huge game because if they win that, Celtic are at home to Ross County and you expect them to win that.

"The following week Celtic go to Pittodrie and I know Aberdeen aren't firing on all cylinders but it's not an easy place to go and if Celtic did somehow slip up again, Rangers are then looking at having a chance to open up a gap."
