The meeting that could affect Ziyech's debut after £33.4m transfer as Chelsea get UEFA boost

Here's all the news from around Stamford Bridge over the past 24 hours.

Referee announced for Aston Villa fixture

Paul Tierney has been confirmed as the referee for Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa this weekend.

Tierney will be assisted at Villa Park by Scott Ledger and Mark Scholes, Graham Scott will be fourth official, while Lee Mason will be on VAR duty at Stockley Park.

The 39-year-old has taken charge of two Chelsea matches this season, with both of them coming back in October.

Chelsea fans shouldn't worry about Timo Werner transfer

The first saw Lampard’s side run out 4-1 winners against Southampton at St Mary’s, with Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, N'Golo Kante and Michy Batshuayi all on target.

While the second saw the Blues crash out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Overall he's refereed four Chelsea games in the Premier League - and the Blues have won them all.

Havertz boost

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro says Kai Havertz's wishes over his future have to be respected, indicating the club will not stand in his way of any potential transfer this summer.

In an interview with Infobae Carro explained that, whilst Leverkusen would like to keep Havertz, he has to be realistic that the Chelsea target views his future elsewhere.

"Kai has been with us for ten years, he is a player who is fully integrated and devoted to the club, but he wants to take a big step," he said. "All the great clubs in Europe are after him and for us, in the end, what the player wants is what is important.

"We would of course like him to keep playing here. He is a very disciplined person with an old head on young shoulders.

"We are open to see what will happen in the future, nobody knows.

"At the moment he is focussed on the season with us. He has been injured the last two games but we hope to have him for the last few fixtures."

Blues handed surprise Timo Werner boost

Chelsea have been handed a surprise boost with the news that Timo Werner may be available to play for them this season.

Having already played for RB Leipzig this season in the Champions League, it was expected that the Blues would not be able to use the £53m 24-year-old until next season.

Yet coronavirus postponement means the summer transfer window could well open before the Champions League's resumption in August, when the competition is set to be completed in a World Cup-style end-of-season tournament.

Whilst UEFA removed cup tie rules for European competition in 2018 after Philippe Coutinho was forced to sit out Barcelona's Champions League campaign following a January move from Liverpool, it was expected that clubs would have to make do with the same European squads they have had since the turn of the year.

Yet the Daily Express report that UEFA will meet today to discuss player registrations for European competitions.

UEFA could relax registration rules in order to allow clubs to play new signings.

How UEFA meeting could affect Ziyech

Sticking with the topic of UEFA's meeting, the outcome will have an impact on Chelsea's other big summer signing.

Hakim Ziyech's £33.4m move from Ajax to Stamford Bridge was officially announced just days after the January transfer window had closed.

The Morocco international's contract with Chelsea is set to begin at the beginning of next month.

Although he's in a rather strange situation. The Dutch league has already been suspended, so the attacking midfielder is waiting to start pre-season training with his new club.

However, his debut could be delayed depending on when the new season begins.

With that said, if UEFA agree to relax registration rules in the Champions League then Chelsea fans could get a look at Ziyech earlier than expected.
