The Mauricio Pochettino record that Jose Mourinho will address to "make a difference" at Spurs

Jamie Carragher is refusing to judge Jose Mourinho in the same way as he has previously judged him.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss replaced Mauricio Pochettino last week, returning to football after 11 months out.

Mourinho was sacked by United in December, with the Reds 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool at the time.

The Portuguese kicked off his reign with a 3-2 win over West Ham on Saturday, but despite the positive start, Carragher doesn't believe Spurs will win the league or Champions League under Mourinho, and that he should be judged on securing Champions League qualification, just like Pochettino was.

He told Monday Night Football: "I’m not going to judge Jose Mourinho as we’ve judged him at every club before, saying he’s got to win the league or the Champions League, I don’t think Mourinho will win either at Spurs because they’re not a club set up to do that.

"Success for Tottenham under five years with Pochettino was getting into the top-four and we lauded him for that.

"So if Jose does the same, we should laud him also, but Jose will feel that he can do what Mauricio did but also, when they get to those big games in domestic cup competitions especially, Spurs have let themselves down badly.

"Not just under Pochettino, going back since 2008. Whenever they got to big games, they let themselves down. This is teams when you go back to Harry Redknapp that had Gareth Bale and Luka Modric in it.

"These Tottenham teams were good enough to win these big games.

"Look at certain ones. A semi-final (v Chelsea in 2012), they lost 5-1. You go further down, you’ve got one against Manchester United (2018), they were 1-0 up in that game and lost 2-1.

"There’s a cup final in there (League Cup in 2015). Possibly as bad as anything really was last year they played Chelsea in a two-legged semi-final, they’re a better team than Chelsea and they have been for a few years, they won the first leg 1-0 and then went to Stamford Bridge and lost, so they’re out.

“Yes we love them but you can’t get away from the fact that they’ve let themselves down and Jose Mourinho’s pitch to the chairman of Tottenham, when he goes in, is that he can win with this team, not that he needs £500m, when he gets to these big games that’s the difference.

"Look at his CV, he will make the difference in big games.

"It won’t be about getting huge transfers funded, and that’s why I rule them out for the league, but he will make a difference in these games and that’s why Tottenham have employed him."
