The Mater in Dublin identified as hospital which allegedly reported 244 Covid-19 cases late

The Mater in Dublin has been identified as the hospital which allegedly reported hundreds of Covid-19 cases late.

It emerged that a spike in cases on Thursday was due to a delay in informing the Health Protection Surveillance Centre by one hospital.

According to Dr Philip Nolan Chair of the National Public Health Emergency Team, fewer than 200 of the 426 reported on Thursday are recent cases.

The number of delayed reported cases in question is 244, dating as far back as March 16.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan also added that a number of the new cases are associated with one specific outbreak in the south of the country.

He said the number that we watch "is still in line with what we would have anticipated based on the reproductive number and the patterns we've seen in recent days".

He added: "So a large number of cases over an extended period of time which are not recent cases adding, as it were, artificially to the number of 426."

Dr Holohan also said work will be done to ensure there are no other hospitals that have not reported cases after the jump in figures on Thursday.

The Mater Hospital has been contacted for a comment.
