The Match rules and format: How Tiger and Peyton vs. Phil and Tom will work

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will face off Sunday afternoon at Woods’ home course, Medalist Golf Club, in a charity match that will raise $10 million for coronavirus relief. The team of Woods and Manning is a considerable betting favorite heading into the match, but with such a long layoff from competition for both pros, anything could happen.

The Match will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET on TNT.

Here’s a look at the format for Sunday’s event. On the front nine, the teams will be playing four-ball, or best ball. Each golfer will play his own ball, and the team will card the lowest of the two scores on a given hole. Brady and Manning will also be given a total of three handicap strokes throughout the front nine.

On the back nine, the format will shift to a modified alternate shot. All four players will tee off, each team will pick one of those shots to play from, and then partners will alternate shots.

Via the PGA Tour:

“Four-Ball will be the format on holes 1-9. The amateur player will be given three handicap strokes on the nine; one stroke each on a par 3, par 4 and par 5 on holes to be identified by the committee.

Modified Alternate Shot will be the format on holes 10-18. On every hole, each player will play from the teeing area. A ball will be chosen be in-play and strokes are played on an alternating basis until the hole is decided, under the Rules of Golf covering Foursomes.”

There will also be a few sideshows. The group will play the entire fifth hole using just one club, which should be fascinating. In addition, Charles Barkley will play a single hole as part of a charity wager.
