The Match Review - Newcastle Women's historic day at St James' Park, plus Newcastle lose to Liverpool

St James’ Park welcomed over 76,000 people through the doors as Newcastle United women played their first game at the stadium. 24 hours prior, the men's side had lost one-nil to Liverpool.

Despite the defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men, it was a great weekend for Newcastle supporters - who showed why many considered them to be the best in the country. With Wor Flags laying out flags for both games, the atmosphere in the stadium before kick-off was unrivalled.

On this weekend’s Match Preview episode of The Everything is Black and White Podcast , Andrew Musgrove and Aaron Stokes take a look back at both games. The pair discuss in length the four-nil win for NUFC women over Alnwick Town, the foundations that are there for the future, and also look at what the men’s defeat to Liverpool tells them about the remainder of the season.

Talking about the women’s game, Stokes said: “It was absolutely historic - a fantastic day. I didn’t expect it to be as big a crowd as it was, I’m not sure anyone really did.

“The club expected they’d have to use the Gallowgate and Leazes but I’m not sure they expected as many fans as there were. It goes to show just how united the football club is at the moment.

“If Mike Ashley had been in charge, I don’t think that game would have taken place at St James’ Park. Even if it had done, I’m not sure it would have drawn anywhere as near as many people.

“A fantastic day for the club. They were all buzzing when they came off the pitch.

“It’s just great for them and for their families. And great to see the owners are sticking to the promises they made on day one.”
