Massive plans aiming to completely transform Tonypandy town centre have been revealed.
The Rhondda Housing Association (RHA) acquired the old Co-op supermarket site on Dunraven Street in 2019 and has drawn up impressive plans to regenerate the area.
A second artist's impression has been drawn up of the site, which features glass fronts and a sawtooth roof structure with glass skylights.
The new site will be called The Big Shed and will be a mixed-use space.
The development will take place over the next two years and will include commercial units and leisure space as well as co-working facilities, affordable homes and a new head office hub for the RHA.
The Co-op store closed in 2012 and more than 50 people lost their jobs as a result. The building has stood empty for almost a decade since.
In 2019, Tonypandy's high street was branded the worst in Wales, leaving traders furious.
RHA will work with the local council and key stakeholders to regenerate Tonypandy town centre with The Big Shed, as well as other projects aimed at a wider regeneration of the town centre.
Work on the building is set to begin this year and RHA are looking for a board chair to help lead the project.
The 17,000 sq ft store site was acquired by RHA in 2019, which had been on the market with a £232,000 price tag.
Later that year, it secured a £100,000 cash boost from the Welsh Government to renovate the building as part of the Valleys Taskforce.
