The Mason Mount dilemma and why Chelsea star's best position is up for debate after Sevilla draw

It might be time for Mason Mount to have a little rest.

In the 62 minutes the young midfielder lasted against Sevilla tonight, he had 36 touches, was booked for a cynical shirt pull on Suso and failed to create anything of note in the final third.

Most of all Mount lacked the energy that defines his game. He worked hard, trying to press off the ball and make stuff happen on it in a game that was tepid beyond his departure.

But the zest those who have observed him closely come to expect was absent. Yet it should be no surprise that he is tired considering how much he has played already this season.

The 21-year-old was used in both Carabao Cup games and featured in all three England internationals; his only absence came in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The decision to use him on the left wing tonight - save for a few minutes early in the second period when he moved across - seemed perplexing considering it meant Christian Pulisic operated on the right and was far less effective too.

The American, who was searching for sharpness in his second start of the season following a hamstring injury, looked much improved when he was moved to his favoured flank in the second half.

But the initial setup was additionally odd because Mount linked up quite well there with Reece James on England duty last week.

In one sense Mount is a victim of his own success - the versatility and willingness to play anywhere means he gets moved about a lot. It is still hard to say what his best position is. As a No8? On the left? On the right? As a No10? Opinion will be split.

But it is equally easy to see why Lampard, and indeed England's Gareth Southgate, view Mount as such a crucial player. Except he needs rest too. This game proved it.
