The Masked Singer's Sophie Ellis-Bextor shares hilarious fear she had before show

Sophie Ellis-Bextor was terrified of coming down to Earth with a bump as she teetered on a plinth in her alien suit on The Masked Singer.

The singer, 41, was the first mystery celebrity to be unmasked in the second series, which started on Boxing Day.

Sophie, who sang Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now in a “brilliant and fun” outfit, said: “I was on a platform and couldn’t see too well. I thought I might fall off.”

Speaking about being a professional singer in the contest, which featured novices such as former Home Secretary Alan Johnson and football hero Teddy Sheringham in the first series, Sophie admitted she had an advantage.

She said: “I felt like a gymnast who had a cool routine with jumps and twists, who then left after their first comedy somersault. But it’s cool.”

Mum-of-five Sophie, who had a huge hit in 2000 with Murder On The Dancefloor, said her distinctive voice meant the judges and viewers
recognised her quickly.

She said: “Even my one-year-old pointed at the telly and shouted ‘Mummy!’ when I started singing in the alien suit.”

On keeping her appearance on the show secret, she said: “It turns out most of my friends and family don’t ask me much about my job after all. It was only down to my own willpower after that.

“The hoodie you wear [backstage] says ‘don’t speak to me’ and quite frankly it’s the best hoodie I’ve ever owned.”

Now, Sophie wants to wear the elaborate alien costume to the next school parents’ evening, which “would be fun”.

Ladbrokes have tipped ex-EastEnders star Jake Wood and JLS singer Aston Merrygold to be in the Robin costume.

* The Masked Singer continues on ITV on Saturdays at 7pm.
