The Masked Singer's Mushroom exposed as Charlotte Church as she comes runner-up to Panda

Charlotte Church has been unmasked as Mushroom on The Masked Singer tonight.

The Welsh singer-songwriter was revealed to be under the toadstool get-up on the ITV guessing game this evening during the show’s final instalment.

The finale of the singing battle welcomed back contestants from the first two series, including last year’s winner Joss Stone, who was unmasked as Sausage in 2021.

Joss joined the judging panel alongside Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan, Rita Ora and Davina McCall - all of whom were left shocked when Mushroom took off their mask to reveal their true identity.

Mushroom's final performances were an operatic masterclass of the Flower Duet by Léo Delibes and a rendition of Demi Lovato's Stone Cold, with three of the judging panel guessing their identity was Charlotte Church ahead of the big reveal.

In their final clue package Mushroom said: "Last time, when it came to names, the panel got themselves in a little mix over who I am. Tonight the mystery of who's hiding under Mushroom will finally be solved. Making it to tonight's final is something I will always remember.

"While I may have been given the diva title over the years, I certainly don't consider myself one."

Mushroom gave viewers and the judges a series of clues in recent weeks, teasing their identity while also throwing detectives off the scent.

Speaking with a Northern accent, but appearing to sing with an Irish tone, everyone was confused - but some Doctor Who fans believed they noticed a number of references to the series.

Clues included legal references, "helping to control life" and bringing in new life, while there was also mention of "wanting to be a number of things".

Perhaps it is a person of many talents, while viewers believed the current Doctor Jodie Whittaker was behind the mask.

Fans took to Twitter, thinking they had sussed it out thanks to the person's accent, as well as what they revealed.

Others thought it might be actress and comedian Aisling Bea, as some questioned if it was a Call The Midwife star.

Loose Women star Jane McDonald has been a popular name thrown into the ring, with many references to the north.

The Masked Singer has had fans all across the UK guessing who might be behind the masks for the last few weeks, as the ultimate guessing game saw ITV viewers take to social media to share wide-ranging theories on the identities.

The Masked Singer’s host Joel Dommett gave fans a sneak hint of who the 2022 winner of the ITV show could be ahead of the final, as the show was pre-recorded.

The 36-year-old told ITV’s Lorraine Kelly: “I was very, very happy with the outcome. It’s such a special final. I think it’s just all out madness, silliness, great guest judge.”

He continued: “I think the three finalists are the three that deserved to be in the final this year. I think they’re very very good.

“One person in particular - I’m not going to give it away - but, I lose my mind. I lose my mind. It comes out of nowhere.”

Last week, Rockhopper was unmasked as Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams on the celeb singing competition.

There was a double elimination on the show, with Aled Jones leaving the programme first when he was unmasked as Traffic Cone earlier in the night, and then later followed by the singer.
