The Masked Singer beats Strictly to win TV BAFTA as producer 'does a jig' after success

A top TV producer from Ayr admitted he performed a celebratory on-stage jig - after his team notched another industry award at Royal Festival Hall, London.

Derek McLean and his team won a TV BAFTA after their show ‘The Masked Singer’ was named the top Entertainment Programme.

Derek’s Glasgow-based company, Bandicoot, makes the UK version of the series, which originated from South Korean programme ‘King of Masked Singer.’

The show – in which secret celebrities show off their vocal talents and viewers try to guess who they are – has become one of the UK TV’s surprise hits of the last two years.

And McLean, whose famous father Willie, managed Ayr United, could not hide his delight after The Masked Singer beat the likes of Strictly Come Dancing and Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway to the top prize.

Derek said on Twitter: “We won a BAFTA for The Masked Singer and I was so chuffed, I did a jig!”

Joining Derek on stage during Sunday night’s awards bash were presenter Joel Dummett and panellist Mo Gilligan.

Presenter Joel Dummett said: “Thank you so much, firstly to ITV for believing in this silly show.

“It’s so silly and so wonderful and so lovely that it has brightened up so many homes and families over the last four years. It’s such a joy to make and everyone loves making it.”

Mo Gilligan added: “People tried to mock it when it first came out and went ‘I don’t know about this’ and now it’s won a BAFTA.

“Honestly, the team and everyone behind the scenes is incredible. it’s great escapism for people at home who just want to watch something that’s not too depressing.”

Derek’s dad Willie McLean said: “It’s great for Derek and his team, they really do work so hard. We’re delighted for them.”

Derek is managing director of Bandicoot Scotland.

Bandicoot’s other recent shows include Scottish BAFTA-nominated series Test Drive.

He is an Emmy award-winning TV producer with over 20 years’ experience in the industry in both the UK and USA.
