The Marquesa Hotel is a boutique haven in the heart of Key West

A cosy cottage style environment makes for the perfect hideaway in lively Key West

Where? In the centre of the historic district of Old Town Key West. Just a block back from the famous Duval Street, which is lined with bars and restaurants, it is perfectly positioned for easy access to the main strip whilst maintaining its own privacy and a sense of calm.

The lowdown: this is the epitome of boutique hotel luxury. Run by the charming Carol Wightman, it is a tranquil and sophisticated retreat that feels like a home away from home.

The service is excellent and never invasive with all the little touches taken into consideration.

Set in a lush interior garden, there are two immaculately maintained swimming pools which glisten under the palm trees.

Former Conch houses dating back to 1884, the main property and its surrounding cottages are painted a pretty pastel blue. Just divine.

What can I expect from my accommodation? The guestrooms are spread across a series of lovely cottage style properties. Poolside rooms come with their own covered porch which provides the perfect breakfast spot.

The fresh and breezy interior design scheme evokes a coastal style. Spacious and smart, it is a pleasure to fall asleep in the comfortable bed and wake up in such a gorgeous environment.

On the menu: Cafe Marquesa has an excellent reputation for its fine dining experience which specialises in grilled meats and seafood. Dishes are beautifully prepared and full of flavour. There is also a cute bar which serves a very good Martini. Alternatively, room service and breakfast is on offer. Complimentary morning coffee and iced drinks in the afternoon are served by the main pool.

Anything else I should know? A sister property called Marquesa 4-1-4 recently opened just around the corner. The design scheme here is modern and sophisticated. Guests of 4-1-4 also have access to the amenities in the original Marquesa property.

Plus, check out lots of Key West tips here.

How do I get there? Fly into Miami International or Fort Lauderdale and then take a short flight into Key West International. Alternatively, it is a fabulous drive along the Florida Keys.
