‘The Many Saints of Newark,’ prequel movie for ‘The Sopranos,’ moves release date to September

The chance to see Tony Soprano in the past will now be released a little deeper into the future.

“The Many Saints of Newark,” a highly anticipated prequel film for “The Sopranos,” has moved its release to Sept. 24, Warner Bros. announced Wednesday evening.

The movie was previously scheduled to come out March 12.

“On September 24, watch as rival gangsters rise up during the explosive era of the Newark riots – The Many Saints of Newark, a feature film prequel to the award-winning The Sopranos,” reads a tweet by Warner Bros.

The movie will premiere both in theaters and on HBO Max that day.

Set in the 1960s and ‘70s, “The Many Saints of Newark” film actor Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony. His father, James Gandolfini, who died in 2013, starred as Tony in the HBO’s wildly popular “The Sopranos” series, which ran from 1999 to 2007.

Leslie Odom Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Ray Liotta, Vera Farmiga and Jon Bernthal also star in the film.

“The Many Saints of Newark” was originally slated to premiere in September 2020, but was moved to the temporary March 12 date last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Warner Bros. recently announced each of its movies in 2021 will premiere simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.
